Amazon Preorder Update & What We’re Going to Do to Make It Up to You

Many of you have been emailing, Tweeting, and Facebooking me asking about the status of your Amazon order. On the announcement post, we told you that the set was actually releasing March 30 and not May 2 as Amazon listed. We got this information from our publisher.

While I was acting on the best information I had, I’m very sorry to say we gave you the wrong date. The set is indeed not releasing until May 2. It was a miscommunication between ourselves and the publisher. Unfortunately, some of you who pre-ordered a set need it now because you were planning on giving it as a birthday or wedding gift in April.

For those of you who pre-ordered a boxed set and need it sooner rather than later, here’s what you can do:

1) Order a set directly from our publisher for $22.19. The publisher’s warehouse is fulfilling and shipping orders right now.

2) Cancel your pre-order with Amazon. Amazon doesn’t charge your card until your order ships. Because the boxed sets aren’t shipping until May 2, you still have time to cancel without incurring a charge to your card.

I know this is a pain in the butt, but this is the only option we have available right now to get you your boxed set ASAP.

Everyone Who Pre-ordered a Book Set Gets a Free AoM Poster

We feel terribly about letting you guys down on this. Your trust is our biggest priority, and we want to try to make things right. To make up for the inconvenience that this pre-order snafu has caused, we’re offering everyone who pre-ordered a boxed set in the past seven days (since March 29) a FREE Art of Manliness poster of their choice ($10 value). Shipping is on us. It’s the least we can do to make up for this mistake.

To claim your free poster simply follow these directions:

Announcing the Winner of the Manvotionals Recitation Contest

Last month we kicked off the Manvotionals Recitation Contest. We asked readers to submit a video of themselves reciting a selection from our latest book, The Art of Manliness Manvotionals: Timeless Wisdom and Advice on Living the 7 Manly Virtues. From the great submissions we received, we chose five finalists and then opened the contest up to voting by the public. It was a really close race among five men whose entries were all truly worthy of the prize, but after the votes were tallied, the man who came out on top was Stephen G. Kohn with his recitation of “The Man with the Iron Will” by Henry H. Johnson:

The imagery of a blacksmith combined with original music by Stephen’s wife and a dedication to Stephen’s fallen brethren made for one awesomely manly video. Congratulations, Stephen! A hearty slap on the back to you. Stephen will be receiving an amazing prize package consisting of a Saddleback Leather Briefcase, a Col. Littleton No. 9 Journal, and a $50 Amazon gift card.

The Finalists for the Art of Manliness Manvotionals Recitation Contest: Vote for Your Favorite!

So we’ve finished watching all the entries to the Manvotionals Recitation Contest, and had such a good time doing it. Thank you to everyone who entered!

As it always is with these contests, picking the five finalists was like choosing our favorite children. First, we were bowled over that so many of you had the chutzpah to put yourself out there on YouTube reciting stuff from the 19th and early 20th centuries. And second, all the entries were awesome for different reasons. Some were fun and creative; others poignant and touching. If only we could give everyone a briefcase. Alas, choose we had to. Videos were judged both on the creativity of the video and the quality of the recitation. And after some good back and forth debate, we went with the videos that simply grabbed us the most and best captured the Manvotional. In the end, we narrowed the entries down to these five finalists:

Don’s video is a pure, straight up recitation. No gimmicks here, because Don doesn’t need any.

The Greatness of Simplicity by Nathan Wofford

Nathan captures the heart of this Manvotional in a transfixing video full of snapshots of the good, simple things in his life.

The Man With the Iron Will by Stephen G. Kohn

A great recitation of a great poem+music composed by Stephen’s wife+the beat of the blacksmith’s hammer+a dedication to Stephen’s fallen brethren=one awesome video.

Wanted a Man by Conrad Gross

“Wanted a Man” is about the world’s need for men who are fully developed in all areas of their lives, and Conrad explores that idea in this creative video.

Simplify, Simplify by Matthew T. Jones

Set to music he composed himself, Matthew harnesses his inner-Thoreau in the woods of Tennessee.
