As a twenty year litigator, I can safely say that, while I’m sure Federal Prosecutors believe that, they’re doing as good, or better, than most civil practitioners, including trial lawyers, money wise. And without a lot of the headaches.

I wonder how common it is for someone to spend 30 years as a US Attorney? I’ve got to think it is pretty unusual. The job sounds pretty rigorous. I had trouble pulling 14 hour days when I was 25 and I know I wouldn’t want to do it now. On top of that, it seems like a great jumping-off point for other things in the private sector or government. In the end, I’m sure Jerry feels good about the impact his career had on the world.

“The ability to think quickly and on your feet, to argue without giving quarter, to communicate well at all levels, to say no, to control your temper, to accept but not show defeat, to listen, to lead, to inspire, to have presence in the courtroom (you’ll know it when you have it), to accept criticism (really hard to do), to have stamina (for 14-16 hour days during trial). And tons and tons of sincerity.”

Those are great qualities to aspire to.

Defense attorneys are the most derided, but most important, lawyers around.
You might think you’ll never need one – or question why anyone would ever want to associate with “criminals” and defend them – but just wait until you’re at the wrong place at the wrong time, or an officer feels a little power hungry, or a buddy gets in trouble.
