[...] Byron “Whizzer” White was a true all-around badass. By strictly disciplining himself and effectively using his time, he pushed both his physical and mental capacities to their limits. At the University of Colorado, White earned 7 athletic letters (three in basketball, two in football, and two in baseball) and was All-Conference in every season in all three sports. Post-graduation, he was drafted into the NFL as its highest paid player. When he wasn’t training (and even at halftime), White was hitting the books, allowing him to graduate at the top of his class both at CU and Yale Law School and earn a Rhodes scholarship. And he never lost sight of what was truly important; White ignored intense pressure and turned down big bucks to interrupt his professional football career and study at Oxford. Such intense dedication paid off; White was named to the Supreme Court and became one of the longest serving justices in US history. [...]

I think the main obstacle to becoming a first class hustler like the good judge is your own stress threshold. After a long stressful day at work your brain just goes "plop" and you don't have the energy to study or work out.

Growing up on a Farm, and being around someone who works hard all there life. I'd say that helped a lot in his mentality of doing the best he could.

I wish I had the same good fortune growing up as the man in this article. He had a great start on life.

I feel a little down after reading the article, because it makes me reflect on how I was raised, and what kind of parent... raised me.

Well life kicked me in the nuts before I even began, but I'll have my success, it'll just take me longer.

Robeson went off the reservation with his support for Stalin. That was wrong. Stalin was one of the most purely evil men on the planet. I don't agree with Robeson at all for much of his radical politics.

But hell, the man was a scholar, athlete, linguist (spoke what, 12 languages fluently?), actor, singer and civil rights activist. What he put his mind to, he did, and he did it a damn sight better than most of us could ever do.

I'm not looking for adulation of the man, I'm just saying he's worthy of respect for his accomplishments--not his ideas.
