Imagine the bums today receiving welfare and then returning even a penny when they got a job. Forget about it. Braddock was class through and through.

Lets not forget about Braddock ending up with 10% of Joe Louis's future profits in a most unmanly and despicable manner.

After defeating Joe Louis, Max Schmeling was in line to fight Braddock for the championship and Madison Square Garden (MSG) had a contract with Braddock for a Braddock-Schmeling title bout. But Braddock went around that deal and fought Joe Louis in Chicago instead making an under the table deal with Joe's management to get 10% of Joe's boxing profits for next ten years. Braddock made more than $150,000 ($2.2 Mil w/inflation) from this arrangement and it gave him a huge incentive to not only dodge Schmeling but to lose the title to Joe Louis. Braddock actually made more money in that fight by losing to Joe Louis. How this was legal is anyone's guess but it led to Joe Louis receiving less than 30% of his actual earnings over his career and owing huge sums to the IRS.

Great post Brett & Kate.
As a huge fan of Braddock, his story is indeed a great metophor for achieving success in life. I’m a big believer of surrounding yourself with the right people. Life is too short to do otherwise.

I loved the movie because it melded with my view of Braddock. I've always loved boxing and underdogs. I'm also a huge history nut and depression era boxers are a great source of inspirational stories. Thanks again Bret and Kate for continued manly motivation.
